Advertising Policy

While we value the financial support which advertising revenue may bring, we feel it is necessary to have a very strict policy on advertising. In particular we feel that we can only carry advertisements which promote products or services which we can fully stand over, or which are from companies and other organisations which have clear policies aimed at reducing their own carbon and resource footprints.

We can carry adverts for products described as eco friendly, energy efficient, carbon neutral, emission free etc only if this is supported by detailed information about the product itself.
Unfortunately, many companies trading within the sustainable building or renewable energy sectors are using misleading or even dishonest ‘information’ to market their products. We feel that this type of behaviour betrays the trust of the consumer, and contributes little if anything towards achieving a more sustainable society.

As a typical example of misleading information, we can point to the many companies selling heat pump based heating systems that use the expression ‘emission free’ to describe their product. Far from being emission free, heat pumps rely on grid electricity, which in Ireland’s case comes from burning fossil fuels very inefficiently in large power stations. The use of heat pump based heating systems also creates a greater demand for electricity, placing an additional burden on our grid infrastructure and increasing the risk of system overload.

Our aim is that would-be advertisers should regard inclusion in our publication as the ultimate stamp of approval!
